World's 50 Best Restaurants 2015

The best restaurants from around the globe

Yes, this list now garners its fair share of negative press attention. Baubles tussled over by the usual suspects: name-brand multimillionaire chefs, each with his own line in supermarket branding and a staple on Sunday-morning or late-night television. Food for an increasingly distant global elite, the only ones capable of flying to eat at Noma in Copenhagen, Central in Lima, or White Rabbit in Moscow at the drop of a hat, let alone meeting the exorbitant price of a set menu. When a foodie institution as anachronistic, fusty and out-of-touch as Michelin is panning you for being, well, anachronistic, fusty, and out-of-touch, you've got a problem.

Such criticisms hold a lot of water. Many industries consolidate power at the top, creating a self-perpetuating status quo - look, for instance, at the unhealthy concentration of power held by Europe's four or five top footballing clubs, or the world's elite list of equally self-aggrandising (and equally out-of-touch) rock-star DJs. Yet is there still a better list than this one for the ardent lover of food, not to mention the coveter of moments to savour long after the money has been spent and the flavour has slipped from the palate? If nothing else, it gives us all something to which to aspire. Anyone who has eaten in Noma never forgets, just as they will bore the behinds off their friends years after their one visit to, say, The Ledbury in London, Schloss Schauenstein in Furstenau, or Gaggan in Bangkok. And is there a better foodie bucket list out there?  We don't think so ...
