We stayed when the hotel first opened its doors back in 2011. Previously a 1930s warehouse, The Waterhouse came back to life as the first top fashion design hotel in Shanghai. It offers 19 boutique rooms that are minimal in design, with an industrial look and feel.
The hotel stood out from the crowd by delivering a smaller boutique experience than the usual skyscrapers that line the Shanghai skyline. It helped that Jason Atherton’s restaurant ‘Table Number 1’ was a roaring success. The fashion crowd flocked and getting a room meant booking well in advance.
Our original review is now a little dated there are plans in the pipeline to pay them a visit, but on a recent visit we were disappointed to find Jason Atherton had left the building and without him at the helm (regardless of whether he is in the kitchen or not) the restaurant has lost its sparkle. The service was poor, the food wasn’t exceptional and the place was empty on a weekend. We are giving a few months to let them find their feet before heading back to lay our heads and fill our bellies
PS: If you are looking for Jason Atherton’s restaurant head over to Commune Social – you won’t regret it!
