Yet another Nigel Platts-Martin venture that excites and entices, the Square is a two-star gem in the heart of Mayfair. Co-owned by head chef Phillip Howard, who has the pedigree of having worked with the great Marco Pierre White and Simon Hopkinson at Roux, it is an unashamedly French food fest.
Whether you opt for the outrageously cheap two-course £25 set lunch menu or the £75 tasting menu you will leave replete yet wishing you had space for more. Starters include such tempting items as consommé of wild mushrooms with a truffle foam and morels or ballottine of foie gras with a salad of pea shoots and hazelnuts to be followed with herb crusted saddle of lamb with shallot purée, artichokes, balsamic vinegar and olive oil or fillet of hand dived plaice with parsley mashed potato and buttered vegetables.
The wine list is legion but the knowledgeable and impeccable staff will happily guide you through it and you can spend as little or as much as you like without fear of being sneered at!
All in all the Michelin boys knew what they were doing when they gave this its second star – simply sublime.
