My relationship with pilates didn't get off to a good start. The first ever class I had the misfortune to attend was so deathly dull that I fell into a deep sleep and had to be rudely awoken by the instructor. A decade later I had quite the opposite problem when I got dragged to a group reformer class that went so fast, under so little supervision, that I found myself hurtling off the carriage swearing never to return.
Until now that is. The issue being that since those cripplingly embarrassing classes I’ve met so many svelte and strong women with killer bods who absolutely swear by it that I had to head back for pilates round three.
Cue Pilates Squared, a reformer-based studio a stone’s throw from Gloucester Road. Caron Bosler, the studio’s owner has been teaching pilates for over 25 years and is an advocate of what is often referred to as a ‘Boot Camp Pilates.' Forget lying flat on your back for an hour, Caron's classes involve a stopwatch, heavy springs and a ‘feel the burn attitude.'
The studio is a small but perfectly formed pilates haven favoured by A-listers, Royals and Ladies alike. My instructor is Hakan Erol, ex-military no less. During an initial consultation we talk through my fitness history and all-important goals then it's all aboard the reformer carriage for a tailored one-hour workout that works every muscle in my body.
It’s the very precise pilates movements that strengthen the core and lengthen muscles week-by-week and private sessions mean undivided attention. Hakan tailors each and every movement towards helping me achieve my personal fitness goals, injury-free, and ups the ante as we go without the threat of injury or boredom.
Five classes down and there’s no doubt that after each hour of stretching, sliding, squatting, planking and pulling I stand a little taller and feel a little lighter. Third time round pilates has me hooked.
For those up for a challenge, the studio offers High Intensity Interval Pilates (HIIP) sessions, which combine principles of Tabata, Reformer Pilates, Classical Pilates, and HIIT to really get the endorphins pumping, muscles working and calories burning - remember, fortune favours the brave!
